DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 5\, 9 – 11 am\nBattle Creek Park \nThe Battle Creek Grassland is a critical nesting area that we have been working to preserve.  It is next to Battle Creek Park\, managed by Corrections\, with restricted public access.  We will hike on park trails along the western and northern edges of the grassland\, where we hope to hear and see migrating fall warblers\, sparrows\, and hawks\, along with the early fall colors of the grassland.  One way to prep for this walk is to watch  From Bobolinks to Blue Jays – Bird at Battle Creek. In her book Feather Trails—A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds\, Sophie Osborn shares her personal experiences reintroducing endangered Peregrine Falcons\, Hawaiian Crows\, and California Condors to the wild. While immersing readers in the triumphs and tribulations of being a wildlife biologist\, Sophie explores the threats that imperiled these birds\, and reveals that what harmed them threatens us\, too. She will discuss what led to the endangerment of these three captivating species\, recount the efforts of biologists to recover their populations\, and read a few excerpts from her book that describe what it was like to work with these magnificent birds. \nSophie A. H. Osborn is an award-winning writer and wildlife biologist whose work has included the study and conservation of more than a dozen bird species in the Americas. She contributed to reintroduction efforts for several endangered birds\, including as a field manager for the California Condor Recovery Program in Arizona. Her first book\, Condors in Canyon Country\, won the 2007 National Outdoor Book Award for Nature and the Environment. Reviewers for the American Birding Association chose her second book\, Feather Trails\, as their favorite bird book of 2024. SUMMARY:Green Darner Dragonfly Migration & the Birds Who Love Them
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 22\, 12 pm – 2 pm at Pig’s Eye Chôkan Tanka Park \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you know these dragonflies migrate South in the Fall just like many of our songbirds do? Come see for yourself on Tuesday\, September 22 at Pig’s Eye Chôkan Tanka Park. \nINFORMATION: Dragonfly expert John Arthur\, from the Minnesota Dragonfly Society\, will lead us on an adventure tracking the migration and seeing what birds join us as we hike through the park. Volunteers from Pig’s Eye Park Friends – Tom Dimond\, Kathy Sidles\, Carissa Scanlan\, and Kiki Sonnen – will help out too. We know the land’s history and the challenges it still faces. This land provides critical shelter and habitat for butterflies\, dragonflies\, coyotes\, otters\, beavers\, deer\, over 100 species of birds\, several species of turtles and snakes\, toads and frogs – including the endangered Blanchard’s Cricket Frog. Pig’s Eye is a critical resource for river fish who spawn and live in the main channel of the Mississippi. Pig’s Eye Lake serves as a nursery for baby river fish who grow up here until they are big enough and old enough to live in the main channel of the River. \nWe will have available loaner binoculars\, a few butterfly nets\, bird field guides\, and Dragonfly and Damselfly field guides. \nWe will meet in the parking lot\, which is about 1/2 mile from the entryway off Pigs Eye Lake Road. As we gather\, we will have short introductions\, and then we will set off on a truck trail to the concrete bridge over Battle Creek. We expect to see the dragons following the creek on its southerly route to Pig’s Eye Lake. We may see Kestrels and Kingfishers try to take down a few of the dragonflies. Other birds we may see are migrating warblers\, Indigo buntings\, goldfinches\, Bald Eagles\,  Killdeer\, Spotted Sandpipers\, White Pelicans\, Sandhill Cranes\, woodpeckers\, mourning doves\, turkeys\, song sparrows\, Great Blue Herons\, blackbirds\, and more. \nDIRECTIONS: Park address is 2165 Pig’s Eye Lake Road\, St Paul\, MN 55119. We will meet in the park’s parking lot. From I-94\, take the Warner Road exit. Watch for brown & white street signs marking the way to Pig’s Eye Park. From Warner Road turn onto Childs Road. Then turn again onto Pig’s Eye Lake Road. This happens right by the congregation of blue cement trucks’ staging area. The park entrance is about a mile south of this point. As you turn onto Pig’s Eye Road you will cross a major RR track line. If you are stopped there because of train traffic\, call or text Kiki at (651) 331-9560 to let her know you’re delayed. Sometimes train traffic only stops you for a few minutes. Sometimes it is 15 minutes or longer. We will wait for you. Continue on Pig’s Eye Lake Road. Go past the Wood Chipper. Then you will see the Park Welcoming sign. Turn into the park and follow the dirt road until you reach the parking lot. \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION: None \nACCESSIBILITY: The walk may be 1 to 1 1/2 mile hike on dirt truck trail or mowed pathway. Gentle rolling elevation. Paths may be muddy or rutted. Off – trail you may encounter thick and tangly grasses \, with unseen burrows or pot holes. DESCRIPTION:In-Person Event – Co-sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nThe North American prairie is an ecological marvel —a lush carpet of grass that stretches to the horizon and is home to some of the nation’s most iconic creatures: bison\, elk\, wolves\, pronghorn\, prairie dogs\, and bald eagles. Plants\, microbes\, and animals together made the grasslands one of the richest ecosystems on Earth and a massive carbon sink\, but the constant expansion of agriculture threatens what remains. \nWhen European settlers encountered the prairie nearly two hundred years ago\, rather than a natural wonder\, they saw an alien and forbidding place. But with the steel plow\, artificial drainage\, and fertilizers\, they converted the prairie into some of the world’s most productive farmland—a transformation unprecedented in human history. American farmers fed the industrial revolution and made North America a global breadbasket\, but at a terrible cost: the forced dislocation of Indigenous peoples\, pollution of great rivers\, and catastrophic loss of wildlife. Today\, industrial agriculture continues its assault on the prairie\, plowing up one million acres of grassland a year. SUMMARY:Sandhill Cranes at Crex Meadows SWA

Crex Ave.\, Grantsburg\, WI \nTuesday\, October 20\, 4:00 ~ 8:15 PM   \nSince historic times\, Greater Sandhill Cranes have congregated by the thousands every autumn evening in the marshes and ponds now called Crex Meadows SWA\, located on the north side of Grantsburg\, WI. People likewise gather to witness seemingly never-ending strands and haunting sounds as the birds seek and settle into shelter for the night. Perhaps this is your year to experience anew or again this enduring ritual. Introductory remarks and instructions will begin at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Visitor Center at Crex Meadow State Wildlife Area in Grantsburg WI. Destination(s) chosen will depend on CMSWA staff information\, recent main roost areas\, number of cars in the caravan\, and current weather. Most likely either roost sites in Crex Meadows or at Fish Lake will be the general area. \nDIRECTIONS:  Take I-35 North to the Rock Creek/ Grantsburg Exit #165 (Highway 70)\, approximately 34 miles from Forest Lake. Take exit 165\, turn right (EAST) on Highway 70\, go 15 miles to the stop light in Grantsburg\, WI. Turn left (NORTH) onto Pine Street. Follow the goose signs through town to the Visitor Center\, located on the NE corner of the junction of County Road D and County Road F. Park and meet in the parking lot. 45.796350\, -92.680483 \nINSTRUCTIONS:    Bring binoculars and a scope if possible.  Dress for cooling temperatures during the evening. Consider bug repellent\, sunscreen\, water\, car supper or snack. Group will gather in the parking lot for basic information from the leaders\, with Q&A. Departure time from the parking lot depends more on weather than conversation. We will caravan from the parking lot and depart as one group at the end of the evening. SUMMARY:Feeder Watch and Bird Sketching at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
DESCRIPTION:Feeder watch at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center\, Bloomington\, MN. Loaner binocs are available. Bring a pad of paper and a pencil if you’d like to sketch birds at the feeder. Kiki Sonnen is event leader. \nThe Visitor Center has a robust bird feeder system that attracts most of our winter feeder birds. Cardinals\, chickadees\, juncos\, sparrows\, woodpeckers\, and wild turkeys are expected. You can bring a camp stool to sit outside\, watch the birds\, and take in the scenery. Or you can go inside the warm\, welcoming Visitor Center and view the birds through the picture window (note the bird-safe glass). Consider bringing your sketchbook along for added entertainment. \nLocation: The Minnesota River Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is located at 3815 American Boulevard E.\, Bloomington\, MN 55425. \nDirections: Meet at the Visitor Center. There is ample parking in the Visitor Center parking lot. \nAccessibility: The Visitor Center and the viewing area by the feeders are ADA-compliant. The sidewalks are paved and level. They should be cleared of ice and snow if the weather cooperates. \nInformation: Loaner binoculars and field guides will be available for your use. Dress for the weather. Even if you plan on staying inside the Visitor Center\, it’s always nice to have warm footwear\, hats\, and mittens for the transition from outdoors to indoors. The Visitor Center also has gifts for sale\, taxidermied creatures\, interpretive info on Minnesota wildlife\, and river and forest habitats. SUMMARY:Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Zoom-Only Presentation – Co-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nStephanie Schubel is the field lead\, lead plover bander\, and field team coordinator for the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team (affiliated with the University of Minnesota and based out of the University of Michigan Biological Station).   She will be presenting her team’s current work and findings.  \nKey Highlights of Her Work\n\n\nField Leadership: For around two decades\, she has led hands-on conservation efforts for the endangered Great Lakes Piping Plover population\, coordinating field crews across nesting sites in Michigan and the broader Great Lakes region. \n\n\nBanding & Research: Schubel oversees the banding of chicks and adults to monitor individual birds\, track survival rates\, trace migration patterns\, and collect genetic data to support recovery efforts.   \n\n\n\n\n\nConservation Milestones: Her team’s work—combining nest monitoring\, public education\, predator management\, and captive rearing—has helped the Great Lakes Piping Plover population rebound from a low of 12 to 17 pairs in the 1980s to a recent record high of over 85 breeding pairs.    \n\n\n\n\n\nPublic Outreach: A central focus of her outreach is teaching beachgoers how to safely share habitat with these camouflage-nesting shorebirds (such as maintaining a ~100-foot distance and keeping dogs leashed).   \n\n\n\nPhoto Credit – Melissa Groo

SUMMARY:Four Seasons in the Sax-Zim Bog - Clinton Dexter-Nienhaus
DESCRIPTION:Zoom-Only Event – Co-sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nThe Sax-Zim Bog is perhaps best known for winter bird-watching opportunities\, especially for folks interested in northern owls\, finches\, and boreal forest specialists. What many visitors don’t realize during a winter visit is that a number of the species they brave ice\, snow\, and temperatures well below zero to see are resident and can be seen year-round! The greater Sax-Zim Bog ecosystem has a lot to offer in every season\, playing host to diverse ecology and biology year-round. This presentation will cover some background on the region\, learn a little about the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, and highlight the seasons and what makes this place so unique! If you have been wanting to visit the area\, but haven’t been able to decide when\, this talk will serve as a great introduction to how to visit and when to visit the Sax-Zim Bog! \nClinton Dexter-Nienhausis the Head Naturalist for the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, a position that he has held for 10 years. He is an Environmental Educator and Naturalist\, and as Head Naturalist for the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, Clinton’s roles vary\, including teaching and scheduling education field trips in the Sax-Zim Bog\, teaching Minnesota Master Naturalist courses\, coordinating a number of Citizen Science endeavors in the Sax-Zim Bog\, and documenting and identifying all species found in the Sax-Zim Bog. His interests in the natural world include fish\, dragonflies and damselflies\, birds\, reptiles and amphibians\, moths and butterflies\, lichens\, prairie and boreal forest plant communities and ecology\, beetles\, ants and grasshoppers\, and everything in between! \nWebsite: saxzim.org

DESCRIPTION:2026 Saint Paul Alliance Winter Bird Count\nThe St Paul Bird Alliance’s Christmas Bird Count is on Saturday\, December 19\, 2026. \nAnyone can participate\, even beginner birders! Over the past century\, volunteer observers\, ranging from experienced ornithologists to casual nature enthusiasts\, have collected data that allows researchers to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America.  \nThis family-friendly activity is a great way to explore Saint Paul’s natural areas while contributing to valuable scientific research. We encourage everyone to participate! \nContact us if you want to join\, and we will match you with an experienced area leader. You must contact us before Dec. 7 so we have time to link you to an area.  Contact Link \nYou can conduct a yard bird count at your home. If interested\, please contact us and provide your name and address. We will verify that your home is in our count circle and\, if it is\, send you information on how to participate in this important and fun event.  You must get in touch with us before Dec. 7.  Contact Link \nAfter the count\, we will be holding a post-count potluck dinner\, location to be determined.  The party begins at 6 pm. SUMMARY:Happy New Year - In the Company of Eagles
DESCRIPTION:Welcome in the New Year by watching the Eagles at Kap’osia Park in South St. Paul\, Thursday\, January 1\, from 11 am to 2 pm. \nYou are invited to bring in the New Year in the company of overwintering Bald Eagles. This section of the Mississippi River main channel has open water\, not iced over. Eagles\, gulls\, and waterfowl can be expected. We will learn about the history of Kap’osia Landing. We will discuss scientific information about Eagles and share stories of mystical connections with them. Bring your stories of Eagles to share. \nLocation: Kaposia Landing Park\, 800 Bryant Avenue\, South St. Paul\, MN. 55075 \nDirections: Meet at the South end of the parking lot. There is ample parking at the park. \nDifficulty: We will be staying on level\, paved paths. We cannot guarantee the paths will be shoveled. We will stay within a half mile or so from the parking lot. \nInformation: Loaner binoculars and field guides will be available for your use. We hope to have spotting scopes to use too.
