Over 170 species of birds have been recorded at the site. \nSpring American Woodcock courtship display flights are wonderful to behold. The Woodcocks like wet meadows and open woods. The AHATS habitats host breeding Woodcocks each year. So we hope your trip is exciting and very rewarding. We will park in the main parking lot and walk a little over 1/2 mile or so on the gravel road. We’ll stop whenever we hear the Woodcocks making their “Peent!” call. DESCRIPTION:Woodcocks of Rush City \nThis Event Has Been Canceled \nThe American Woodcock song and sky dance are remarkably entertaining. They migrate in the spring and fall using the prime habitats of the St Croix River valley\, and some breed near Rush City\, MN\, in early upland successional forest. This truly is an incredible woodland shorebird with unique adaptations for seeing\, feeding\, communicating\, and courting. Paying little attention to bird watchers\, courting males spiral high\, then come twittering down to land in nearly the same place as the take-off. \nA special opportunity to view Woodcocks performing the sky dance is being offered as a Saint Paul Bird Alliance field trip\, led by Ed and Chase Davies and John Hendrickson. They will lead a discussion on the unique qualities of American Woodcocks and what makes the place so special for both resident and migrant populations\, followed by a very short walk to the viewing area. \nViewers usually hear many males “peenting”\, have several birds to approach for closer observation\, and more often than not the ability to see a woodcock fly by at close range\, all in an easily accessible area. (Of course\, there are no guarantees\, wild birds being what they are\, even when so single-minded.) \nTHE EXACT DATE is weather-dependent. It will be chosen to allow for the best overall conditions for viewing male woodcock sky dances. If you have any interest and availability on any of the dates of April 18\, 19\, or 20 (Sat\, Sun\, Mon.)\, please register so we can email you the exact date on Friday\, April 17\, no later than 8 PM. \nThis approach of choosing one night from among three allows us to take advantage of the best overall weather conditions\, which should extend the viewing distance and time into the deepening dusk. The best weather would be a cool\, clear evening with low humidity\, which is why you need warm clothes (more on that below). \nREGISTRATION: Registration is required to receive the email with the exact date and any other pertinent information. Please register by sending Ed an email at eddavies60@gmail.com.  Include your name\, mobile phone number\, and email address. Please be sure your email address is correct. \nSPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: As darkness falls\, so does the thermometer. Dress much warmer than you think necessary – plan for at least 15ᵒ degrees cooler than where you live. Warm footwear\, gloves or mittens\, a knit hat. . . consider wind pants. Flashlights are not needed; you will learn and experience why. \nDRIVING DIRECTIONS: Drive time from the northern junction of 35W/35E to the parking area is 40 minutes at the posted speed limits. Drive north on I-35 to Exit 159 for Rush City. Turn right (east) onto 4th Street/MN 361. Travel 1.4 miles through Rush City to the only stop sign on this road. Turn left onto Bremer\, which soon becomes Forest Blvd. Travel 2.3 miles and turn right onto Co 56 (aka 530th Street). Travel east on County Road 56 for 4.4 miles to where County Road 56 turns right (south). SLOWLY turn right and immediately turn left down into the parking area. We will help you to park tightly and face in a direction for easier departure. The park’s variety of habitats — oak forest\, marsh\, grassland\, and lakefront — makes it a great birding destination\, with over 180 species sighted there. \nBirding at a single location over several months can be a great way to get started. This series of four field trips will repeat popular excursions from last year\, giving participants the chance to get to know the park and watch for different birds each month as the seasons change. In addition to getting to know the birds of Silverwood\, participants will also be introduced to basic birding techniques and tools\, including digital resources. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars; a few extra pairs will be available. \nDIRECTIONS:     Meet at the doors leading into the Visitor Center from the parking lot. Come for any of the sessions–attending all is not required. \nACCESSIBILITY:     Most paths are paved\, with some unevenness and small inclines. We might even get lucky and see the park’s resident great horned owls as they start nesting. \nTuesday\, March 17: 2-4 PM \nIn March\, we will begin to see some early migrants returning to the park — waterfowl\, perhaps robins\, and red-winged blackbirds. We’ll also notice an increase in bird songs that we will learn to identify. \nTuesday\, April 14: 2-4 PM \nApril showers melt the ice on Silver Lake\, which brings more waterfowl\, along with sparrows\, swallows\, and maybe even some early warblers or phoebes. With some luck\, we might catch a glimpse of a migrating shorebird along the lakeshore or see the fluffy head of an owlet. \nTuesday\, May 12: 2-4 PM \nMay brings warblers\, warblers\, and more warblers! We’ll also begin to see some of the park’s beautiful summer residents\, including orioles\, rose-breasted grosbeaks\, and bluebirds. We might even get lucky and see the park’s resident great horned owls as they start nesting. \nTuesday\, March 17: 2-4 PM \nIn March\, we will begin to see some early migrants returning to the park — some waterfowl and perhaps robins and red-winged blackbirds. We’ll also notice an increase in bird songs that we will learn to identify. \nTuesday\, April 14: 2-4 PM \nApril showers melt the ice on Silver Lake\, which brings more waterfowl\, along with sparrows\, swallows\, and maybe even some early warblers or phoebes. With some luck\, we might catch a glimpse of a migrating shorebird along the lakeshore or see the fluffy head of an owlet. \nTuesday\, May 12: 2-4 PM \nMay brings warblers\, warblers\, and more warblers! We’ll also begin to see some of the park’s beautiful summer residents\, including orioles\, rose-breasted grosbeaks\, and bluebirds. While the leaves returning to the trees makes seeing birds more challenging\, the variety of species in the park in May makes this one of the most exciting times of year for birding. \n  \n

Crex Ave.\, Grantsburg\, WI \nTuesday\, October 21\, 4:00 ~ 8:15 PM   \nSince historic times\, Greater Sandhill Cranes have congregated by the thousands every autumn evening in the marshes and ponds now called Crex Meadows SWA\, located on the north side of Grantsburg\, WI. People likewise gather to witness the sight of seemingly never-ending strands and haunting sounds as the birds seek and settle in to shelter for the night. Perhaps this is your year to experience anew or again this enduring ritual. Introductory remarks and instructions will begin at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Visitor Center at Crex Meadow State Wildlife Area in Grantsburg WI. Destination(s) chosen will depend on CMSWA staff information\, recent main roost areas\, number of cars in the caravan\, and current weather. Most likely either roost sites in Crex Meadows or at Fish Lake will be the general area. \nDIRECTIONS     Take I-35 North to the Rock Creek/ Grantsburg Exit #165 (Highway 70)\, approximately 34 miles from Forest Lake. Take exit 165\, turn right (EAST) on Highway 70\, go 15 miles to the stop light in Grantsburg\, WI. Turn left (NORTH) onto Pine Street. DESCRIPTION:1301 Arlington Ave. E   St. Paul\, MN 55106 \n Saint Paul Bird Alliance joins with Friends of Swede Hollow and Friends of the Parks and Trails of St. Paul and Ramsey County  to offer this opportunity to stroll along a portion Bruce Vento Regional Trail  Learn the history of the land\, the Trail\, and current activities to save this important corridor from transit development. Along the way we’ll look for some summer birds. Beginners are most welcome. \nINFORMATION      Bring binoculars if you have them. A limited number of binoculars are available to borrow. Landscape here is varied and includes lakes\, woods\, wetlands\, and open grassland. Group usually birds Grass and Snail Lakes\, then stops at Taste of Scandinavia Bakery (bring bike lock) for brunch or early lunch. Lafayette Frontage Rd\, St. Paul\, MN 55107 \nSunday\, June 22\, 8:00 AM to Noon \nDiscover the fun of birding from a bicycle along the Mississippi River\, riding from the Saint Paul Airport past the Pigs Eye Island SNA Heron Rookery to Kaposia Landing (2.6 miles one way) and the Rock Island Swing Bridge (7.8 mi\, one way)\, visiting prime birding locations for Ramsey and Dakota Counties. Landscape is urban\, following both the big river and train tracks from Saint Paul to South Saint Paul\, with wetlands at the start (near the airport) and small wooded areas along the way. Some riders may want to do a full day ride continuing to Hastings\, including biking through Spring Lake Park. DESCRIPTION:Ford Area C birding outing\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 14\, 2025 –9:00 am to 11:00 am\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHidden Falls Regional Park\, St. Paul\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the St. Paul Bird Alliance and FMR for a riverfront birding walk to a unique St. Paul site: Ford Area C\, a former hazardous waste dump whose proposed cleanup plan will be open for public input later this year. \nStaff will share updates about St. Paul riverfront happenings while we look for birds along the shoreline and through the floodplain forest. Bird lovers of all ages and experience levels are welcome; volunteers will be on hand to teach you. \nThis event starts at Hidden Falls Regional Park. The walk to Area C is 1.5-2 miles round-trip on flat dirt trails; there may be a few minor obstacles. Hidden Falls has ample free parking and porta-potties on site. \nJust so you know\, registration is required as capacity is limited\, and no pets are allowed on the outing. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 8\, 8:00 AM to Noon \nBike\, Bird & Sketch Sunday\, June 8\, Como Park to Frogtown Park & Farm \nDiscover the fun of birding from a bicycle and sketching birds you see in St Paul’s prime parkland green space. Birders\, bicyclists\, and sketchers – all skill levels are welcome. This is a family-friendly event. \nBikers meet at the Como Park Pavilion\, 1360 N. Lexington Parkway\, St Paul\, MN 55103 at 8 a.m. Bikers will be traveling 2.5 miles between Como Park and Frogtown Park. The two parks are connected by the Lexington Parkway bike path to the W. Minnehaha bike lanes. Como Park includes the Lake\, a zoo\, conservatory\, picnic grounds\, golf course and Cardinal Woods. There are restrooms in the pavilion. Frogtown Park is an urban park with native plant landscaping\, native tree planting\, picnic tables and organic farm plots. Top of the Hill provides scenic views of the city. There is a port-a-potty on site. \nPublic transportation- Como Park is accessible by MTC bus lines 3 and 83. Frogtown Park is accessible by MTC bus line 67. \nDirections: Bikers meet in the south parking lot of the Como Park Pavilion at 8 a.m. Bring bikes\, helmet\, binoculars\, sunscreen\, water. You’re encouraged to wear a high-visibility clothing and bring bike lights. \nSketchers meet at Top of the Hill\, Frogtown Park & Farm\, 946 W. Minnehaha\, St Paul MN 55104 at 9 a.m. Bring art supplies and binoculars or use the ones we provide. \nInformation: Biking difficulty is easy to moderate.
