SUMMARY:Sandhill Cranes at Crex Meadows SWA
DESCRIPTION:102 E. Crex Ave.\, Grantsburg\, WI \nTuesday\, October 21\, 4:00 ~ 8:15 PM   \nSince historic times\, Greater Sandhill Cranes have congregated by the thousands every autumn evening in the marshes and ponds now called Crex Meadows SWA\, located on the north side of Grantsburg\, WI. People likewise gather to witness the sight of seemingly never-ending strands and haunting sounds as the birds seek and settle in to shelter for the night. Perhaps this is your year to experience anew or again this enduring ritual. Introductory remarks and instructions will begin at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Visitor Center at Crex Meadow State Wildlife Area in Grantsburg WI. Destination(s) chosen will depend on CMSWA staff information\, recent main roost areas\, number of cars in the caravan\, and current weather. Most likely either roost sites in Crex Meadows or at Fish Lake will be the general area. \nDIRECTIONS     Take I-35 North to the Rock Creek/ Grantsburg Exit #165 (Highway 70)\, approximately 34 miles from Forest Lake. Take exit 165\, turn right (EAST) on Highway 70\, go 15 miles to the stop light in Grantsburg\, WI. Turn left (NORTH) onto Pine Street. Follow the goose signs through town to the Visitor Center\, located on the NE corner of the junction of County Road D and County Road F. Park and meet in the parking lot. 45.796350\, -92.680483 \nINSTRUCTIONS    Bring binoculars and a scope if possible.  Dress for cooling temperatures during the evening. Consider bug repellant\, sunscreen\, water\, car supper or snack. Group will gather in the parking lot for basic information by the leaders with Q and A. Departure time from the parking lot depends more on weather than conversation. We will caravan from the parking lot and depart as one group at the end of the evening. If destination is in Crex Meadows SWA\, carpooling will be strongly encouraged; if destination is Fish Lake SWA all will drive separately. \nREGISTRATION     Register with Louise Eidsmoe 651-231- 0453 louise.eidsmoe@gmail.com \nDIFFICULTY     Viewing can be improved somewhat by walking the road slowly\, staying close beside the cars\, so as not to spook the cranes. Primarily a car caravan with some short walks along road. NOTE: Modern restrooms are located in the Visitors Center (715-463-2896) which has limited hours in October. \nLEADERS     Louise Eidsmoe 651-231-0453 louise.eidsmoe@gmail.com   Chase Davies 651-246-9754 RockyBirder@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:Up Close and Personal with the Great Gray Owl
DESCRIPTION:Co-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nGet Your Zoom Link Here \nJoin us for a presentation on Great Gray Owl biology and ecology by Dr. James Duncan. Jim has been studying this “Phantom of the Northern Forest” for over four decades in Manitoba\, Ontario\, Minnesota\, and California. One of his most recent discoveries is how this owl overcomes an auditory illusion when hunting small mammals under thick snow. \nJim Duncan obtained a Ph.D. in 1992 from the University of Manitoba for research on the Great Gray Owl. Throughout his biology career\, Jim was active in diverse local\, national\, and international conservation initiatives until his retirement in 2018 as Director of Manitoba’s Wildlife and Fisheries Branch. \nJim claims that his various jobs were simply a way to support his obsessive habit of studying owls with his life partner and fellow zoologist\, Patsy. Together\, they have researched owls for 40 years\, have banded over 2\,500 owls\, and have published hundreds of articles\, papers\, and several symposium proceedings on owls. Jim’s three beautifully illustrated books on owls of the world are an example of the importance Jim places on sharing scientific knowledge with the public in an engaging manner. \nIn 2018 Jim established a social enterprise called Discover Owls which conducts education\, research and conservation programs on owls in Manitoba and around the world. To date he has delivered over 600 live owl presentations to school classrooms and other venues and has delivered over 180 lectures and talks on owls and conservation. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/discoverowls.ca \nwww.discoverowls.ca \nZoom Registration Information to Follow

SUMMARY:Why “YOU” are not like a bird - Stan Tekiela - This Event is Full
DESCRIPTION:This Event is FULL \nIn Person Only – No Cost but Reservations Required  \nCo-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nWe often compare our human bodies and senses (such as eyesight\, hearing\, digestion\, reproduction\, and more) and project what we think we know onto birds and their behavior. In this fun\, yet in-depth presentation\, Stan walks us through why we are almost always wrong when we compare ourselves to the birds. His extensive knowledge of bird biology is presented in his usual humorous\, accessible manner. \nNaturalist\, wildlife photographer\, and author Stan Tekiela is the creator of the popular state-specific field guides\, including Birds of Minnesota\, Wildflowers of Minnesota\, and Trees of Minnesota. Over the past four decades\, Stan has authored more than 200 field guides\, nature appreciation books\, and wildlife audio CDs for nearly every state in the nation\, presenting many species of birds\, mammals\, reptiles and amphibians\, trees\, wildflowers\, and cacti. \nWith a Bachelor of Science in Natural History from the University of Minnesota and more than 40 years as an active professional naturalist\, Stan studies and photographs wildlife throughout the United States and has received national and regional awards for his books and photographs. He is also a well-known columnist and radio personality; his syndicated column appears in over 20 newspapers\, and his wildlife programs are broadcast on several Midwest radio stations. He is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association and Canon Professional Services along with many other professional organizations.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series | Rebecca Heisman - Surprising Secrets of Bird Biology
DESCRIPTION:** THIS IS A ZOOM-ONLY PRESENTATION ** \n** Co-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance ** \nReservation and Zoom Link \nBecause they’re warm-blooded\, it’s easy to imagine that birds are basically feathery versions of mammals—but in reality\, of course\, they’re dinosaurs. Birds’ anatomy and physiology are wildly different from ours. \nRebecca Heisman promises that you’ll learn at least one new and surprising fact in this talk (probably more than one!) as we take a whirlwind tour of what birds are\, where they came from\, and how they breathe\, fly\, sing\, sense the world around them\, and more. It’s the ornithology course you never got to take in college\, condensed into a single entertaining hour. It will share facts and stories about bird respiration\, flight\, song\, and senses that many birders aren’t familiar with. \nRebecca Heisman is a science writer based in eastern Washington who loves “nerding” out about birds. She has contributed to publications like Audubon Magazine\, Living Bird\, and Bird Conservation. From 2015 to 2020\, she worked for the American Ornithological Society\, the world’s largest professional organization for bird scientists. Initially\, as an independent contractor helping to promote research published in AOS’s scientific journals and later as its first full-time communications staffer\, Heisman brought bird science to a broader scientific community and the public. There\, she became deeply familiar with the North American ornithological community and grew excited about the diverse and fascinating methods for studying birds. \nTo learn more about Rebecca’s work\, check out these sources: \nhttps://rebeccaheisman.com/\, https://rebeccaheisman.substack.com/ \n

SUMMARY:Birding through the Months at Silverwood Park
DESCRIPTION:This is the 1st of a 4-trip Silverwood Park birding experience (February thru May). Attend one or all the trips! \nSilverwood Park is a beautiful urban park on the shores of Silver Lake. The variety of habitats in the park–oak forest\, marsh\, grassland\, and lakefront–make it a great birding destination\, with over 180 different species sighted in the park. \nBirding in a single location over several months can be a great way to get into birding. This series of four field trips will repeat popular excursions from last year\, giving participants the chance to know the park and watch for different birds each month as the seasons change. In addition to getting to know the birds of Silverwood\, participants will also be introduced to basic birding techniques and tools\, including digital resources. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars; a few extra pairs will be available. \nDIRECTIONS:     Meet at the doors leading into the Visitor Center from the parking lot. Field trips will be conducted in most weather\, with the exception of heavy rain.  45.046808\, -93.224715 \nREGISTRATION:     No registration necessary. Come for any of the sessions–attending all is not required. \nDIFFICULTY:     Most paths are paved\, but may be icy in the winter. Walks will range from 1-1.5 miles. \nLEADER:      Jen Miller and Liz Richards; email birdingjen@gmail.com with any questions \n  \nTuesday\, February 24: 2-4 PM   \nBirding in the winter is a great way to get comfortable with the species that live in the park year-round–plus\, there are no leaves on the trees to get in the way of seeing birds! This month\, we’ll look for common Minnesota winter birds such as chickadees and nuthatches\, along with several woodpecker species. We might even get lucky and see the park’s resident great horned owls as they start nesting. \nTuesday\, March 17: 2-4 PM \nIn March\, we will begin to see some early migrants returning to the park — some waterfowl and perhaps robins and red-winged blackbirds. We’ll also notice an increase in bird songs that we will learn to identify. \nTuesday\, April 14: 2-4 PM \nApril showers melt the ice on Silver Lake\, which brings more waterfowl\, along with sparrows\, swallows\, and maybe even some early warblers or phoebes. With some luck\, we might catch a glimpse of a migrating shorebird along the lakeshore or see the fluffy head of an owlet. \nTuesday\, May 12: 2-4 PM \nMay brings warblers\, warblers\, and more warblers! We’ll also begin to see some of the park’s beautiful summer residents\, including orioles\, rose-breasted grosbeaks\, and bluebirds. While the leaves returning to the trees makes seeing birds more challenging\, the variety of species in the park in May makes this one of the most exciting times of year for birding. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Birding through the Months at Silverwood Park
DESCRIPTION:This is the 2nd of a 4-trip Silverwood Park birding experience (February through May). Attend one or all the trips! \nSilverwood Park is a beautiful urban park on the shores of Silver Lake. The park’s variety of habitats — oak forest\, marsh\, grassland\, and lakefront — makes it a great birding destination\, with over 180 species sighted there. \nBirding at a single location over several months can be a great way to get started. This series of four field trips will repeat popular excursions from last year\, giving participants the chance to get to know the park and watch for different birds each month as the seasons change. \nACCESSIBILITY:    Most paths are paved\, but may be icy in the winter. Walks will range from 1-1.5 miles. \nLEADERS:      Jen Miller and Liz Richards; email birdingjen@gmail.com with any questions \n  \nTuesday\, February 24: 2-4 PM   \nBirding in the winter is a great way to get comfortable with the species that live in the park year-round–plus\, there are no leaves on the trees to get in the way of seeing birds! This month\, we’ll look for common Minnesota winter birds such as chickadees and nuthatches\, along with several woodpecker species. We might even get lucky and see the park’s resident great horned owls as they start nesting. \nTuesday\, March 17: 2-4 PM \nIn March\, we will begin to see some early migrants returning to the park — waterfowl\, perhaps robins\, and red-winged blackbirds. While the leaves returning to the trees make seeing birds more challenging\, the park’s variety of species in May makes this one of the most exciting times of year for birding. \n  \n
