SUMMARY:Nesting Areas and Related Happenings at the Arden Hills Army Training Site (AHATS)
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 5\, 7-9 AM  \nThe Arden Hills Army Training Site (AHATS) is a 2\,370-acre military training area for the Minnesota National Guard and the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs. Its vast area and variety of habitats are also used for environmental and wildlife conservation programs. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded at the site. \nJune marks the beginning of summer\, when territories are generally all set and families are busily growing. In contrast to migration-style birdwatching\, we move to different habitats where breeding territories are located. We will be birding in a guided car caravan\, stopping at choice locations. The site has lots of prairie and wooded edges for us to explore for birding. \nDIRECTIONS: Enter the AHATS campus on the Hamline Ave extension\, just north of MN Hwy 96. Turn left (west) onto Ben Franklin Rd and proceed about ¼ mile to the Ben Franklin gate.  Meet inside the gate\, roughly at 1567 Ben Franklin Road. We will proceed as a group in a caravan to multiple sites on the property. 45.08330° N\, 93.16482° W \nINFORMATION:     The site has restricted access.  Be prepared to ride in a car caravan with 4 individuals per vehicle. All caravan vehicles will enter and exit the property together. \nREGISTRATION:  Registration is required and begins May 15. Attendance is limited to 25 people\, taken in the order of receipt of replies.  Please report any changes in numbers right away so those on the waitlist can enjoy this rare opportunity. Thank you. \nACCESSIBILITY:     Ride in car caravan\, get in and out of vehicles\, travel short distances from vehicles on gravel\, paved\, or grassy surfaces. Outdoor toilets are very widely spaced across the site. \nLEADERS:    Mary Lee\, AHATS Environmental Protection Specialist\, Kiki Sonnen\, 651-331-9560 kikisonnen@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Chimney Swift Sit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a program introducing chimney swifts and their life history\, natural history\, and some of the remaining mysteries we are striving to uncover. Stay for a chimney swift count as they descend into their chimney at dusk. \nChimney swifts have come to rely on human-made structures\, such as chimneys\, for roosting and nesting. Mags Edwards from Minnesota DNR Nogame Wildlife Program will discuss these fascinating birds and how we can help them. \nCommunity science efforts are underway to monitor the chimney swift populations. We will hear more about these efforts from Monica Bryand of Urban Bird Collective and opportunities for you to help scout and monitor chimney swifts around the Twin Cities. As the chimney swifts circle and return to the Casa de Luz chimney for the evening\, we will count them together and submit our count to the Chimney Swift Roost Monitoring Project. \nGood to Know: \n\n\nStreet parking is free\, and somewhat limited. \n\n\n Dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair or blanket for sitting. \n\n\nThere are no bathrooms available. \n\n\nRegistration for this free event is required. Limited to 50 participants. \nThis event is free to attend; however\, an optional $5 donation per person to the church is encouraged. We will collect donations at registration and donate the lump sum to the church on the group’s behalf. \nImage credit: Ben Cvengros/Audubon Photography Awards
