SUMMARY:Carrol L. Henderson - A National Legacy: Fifty Years of Nongame Wildlife Conservation in Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:** Co-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance ** \n** In-Person Only – Registration Required (link to follow) ** \nA National Legacy: Fifty Years of Nongame Wildlife Conservation in Minnesota. \nMr. Henderson will speak about his book “A National Legacy\,” which captures the spirit and innovation behind the dedication required to drive lasting change in wildlife conservation. It highlights the significant and historic transition by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources from a focus on managing game species for hunters’ benefit to a broader ecological approach\, marked by the creation of the Nongame Wildlife Program in 1977. This progressive Minnesota program\, driven mainly by Carrol L. Henderson\, became a national model for other states to develop their own nongame wildlife programs. \nCarrol Henderson graduated from Iowa State University\, majoring in zoology with minors in botany and physics. In 1968\, he attended graduate school at the University of Georgia and studied under Dr. Eugene P. Odum\, who authored the textbook\, Principles of Ecology. During graduate school\, he focused on ecology\, forestry\, wildlife management\, and also studied feature writing\, public speaking\, and public relations. He also studied in Costa Rica. Over the years\, his wildlife interests began with taxidermy and hunting waterfowl\, pheasants\, grouse\, woodcock\, and deer. Henderson’s interests have expanded to birding\, nature photography\, gardening for wildlife\, bird watching\, feeding\, and leading international birding tours. He and his wife Ethelle live in Blaine\, Minnesota.

DESCRIPTION:1567 Ben Franklin Road\, Arden Hills\, MN \nFriday\, June 5\, 7-9 AM  \nThe Arden Hills Army Training Site (AHATS) is a 2\,370-acre military training area for the Minnesota National Guard and the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs. Its vast area and variety of habitats are also used for environmental and wildlife conservation programs. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded at the site. \nJune marks the beginning of summer\, when territories are generally all set and families are busily growing. In contrast to migration-style birdwatching\, we move to different habitats where breeding territories are located. We will be birding in a guided car caravan\, stopping at choice locations. The site has lots of prairie and wooded edges for us to explore for their birding potential. \nDIRECTIONS:     Enter the AHATS campus on the Hamline Ave extension just north of MN Hwy 96. Turn left (west) on to Ben Franklin Rd and proceed about ¼ mile to the Ben Franklin gate.  Meet inside the gate\, roughly at 1567 Ben Franklin Road. We will proceed in a car caravan as group to multiple sites within the property. 45.08330° N\, 93.16482° W \nINFORMATION:     The site has restricted access.  Be prepared to ride in a car caravan with 4 individuals per vehicle. All caravan vehicles will enter and exit the property together. \nREGISTRATION:  Registration is required and begins May 15. Attendance is limited to 25 people\, taken in the order of receipt of replies.  Please report any changes in numbers right away so those on the waitlist can enjoy this rare opportunity. Thank you. \nACCESSIBILITY:     Ride in car caravan\, get in and out of vehicles\, travel short distances from vehicles on gravel\, paved\, or grassy surfaces. Outdoor toilets are very widely spaced across the site. \nLEADERS:    Mary Lee\, AHATS Environmental Protection Specialist\, Kiki Sonnen\, kikisonnen@gmail.com
