DESCRIPTION:Due to weather\, this event has been cancelled.\n\nMay 19th\, 5:30-7:30 PM: Volunteer at Cardinal Woods in Como Park\nWith help from the St. Paul Parks department\, our chapter has cared for a small section of woodland within the Como Regional Park system for many years. We have managed these woods as a preserve for birds and other wildlife. Over time\, this section has had several names. Now\, we refer to it as Cardinal Woods. Join us and the St. Paul Parks Department in pulling invasive plants and removing trash from the area so that it can better support birds and other wildlife. \n\nSign-up: All are welcome! Contact Karina Hanson (karinahanson@icloud.com) to sign up. She will notify volunteers by email if the event must be cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather. \nLocation: Como Park in St. Paul. \n\nDirections: We will meet at the Joyce Kilmer Fireplace in the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (coordinates: 44°58’34.6″N 93°09’08.2” W). City staff will wear yellow safety vests at the fireplace; look for them. There is parking in a small lot across from the fireplace and at the Como Pool.  \nInformation: Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toed shoes. The St. Paul Parks Department will provide the necessary equipment. The parks department will require all volunteers to sign a waiver on-site.

DESCRIPTION:16821 O’Brien Trail N\, Marine on St Croix\, MN 55047 \nWilliam O’Brien has a wide variety of habitats for us to explore.  We will start by following the grass trails along the forest’s edge\, looking and listening for warblers\, finches\, sparrows\, and vireos.  As we move along the trail\, we will pass through the walk-in campgrounds and possibly hear Towhees singing from the hillside.  The next stop is the Beaver Pond\, where herons\, egrets\, and Kingfishers usually hang out. A little bit further along the trail\, we may hear Wood Thrush sing\, and then we are out into the marsh area to search for wrens and flycatchers. \nDIRECTIONS     Meet at the Visitor Center parking lot.  45.222898\, -92.767705  Follow Hwy. 95 North of Marine St. Croix and turn left into the park entrance. The visitor center is the first left and right after entering the park – follow the signs.  NOTE – Annual or Daily MN State Park Pass Required – if you don’t have one\, please arrive early so you can use the self-serve kiosk. For those who are interested\, our hosts will top off the field trip with a demonstration of their hobby beekeeping and bantam chicken operations. Kiki Sonnen will also offer a Bird Sit and Sketch opportunity\, drawing the goldfish pond\, native water plants and migrating songbirds. Bring a sketchbook\, camp stool and art supplies for this. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 8\, 8:00 AM to Noon \nBike\, Bird & Sketch Sunday\, June 8\, Como Park to Frogtown Park & Farm \nDiscover the fun of birding from a bicycle and sketching birds you see in St Paul’s prime parkland green space. Birders\, bicyclists\, and sketchers – all skill levels are welcome. This is a family-friendly event. \nBikers meet at the Como Park Pavilion\, 1360 N. Lexington Parkway\, St Paul\, MN 55103 at 8 a.m. Bikers will be traveling 2.5 miles between Como Park and Frogtown Park. The two parks are connected by the Lexington Parkway bike path to the W. Minnehaha bike lanes. Como Park includes the Lake\, a zoo\, conservatory\, picnic grounds\, golf course and Cardinal Woods. There are restrooms in the pavilion. Frogtown Park is an urban park with native plant landscaping\, native tree planting\, picnic tables and organic farm plots. Top of the Hill provides scenic views of the city. There is a port-a-potty on site. \nPublic transportation- Como Park is accessible by MTC bus lines 3 and 83. Frogtown Park is accessible by MTC bus line 67. \nDirections: Bikers meet in the south parking lot of the Como Park Pavilion at 8 a.m. Bring bikes\, helmet\, binoculars\, sunscreen\, water. You’re encouraged to wear a high-visibility clothing and bring bike lights. \nSketchers meet at Top of the Hill\, Frogtown Park & Farm\, 946 W. Lafayette Frontage Rd\, St. Paul\, MN 55107 \nSunday\, June 22\, 8:00 AM to Noon \nDiscover the fun of birding from a bicycle along the Mississippi River\, riding from the Saint Paul Airport past the Pigs Eye Island SNA Heron Rookery to Kaposia Landing (2.6 miles one way) and the Rock Island Swing Bridge (7.8 mi\, one way)\, visiting prime birding locations for Ramsey and Dakota Counties. Landscape is urban\, following both the big river and train tracks from Saint Paul to South Saint Paul\, with wetlands at the start (near the airport) and small wooded areas along the way. Some riders may want to do a full day ride continuing to Hastings\, including biking through Spring Lake Park. DESCRIPTION: Saint Paul Bird Alliance’s annual butterfly count will take place on Saturday\, July 12\, from 9:45 to 2:00 PM at Arden Hills Army Training Site (AHATS). A map and other information will be emailed to participants in the days prior to the count. DESCRIPTION:July 19th\, 8:30-10:30 AM: Volunteer at “Cardinal Woods” in Como Park“Cardinal Woods” is a property formerly managed by the St. Paul Bird Alliance and needs maintenance. Join us and members of the St. Paul Parks Department in maintaining the area so that “Cardinal Woods” can better support birds. The St. Paul Parks Department is not yet sure whether it will be a planting event\, trash pickup\, weeding\, or something else- but they will provide all the necessary equipment. All you have to do is show up ready to help out!\nLocation: Como Park in St. Paul.Directions: We will meet at the Joyce Kilmer Fireplace in the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom (coordinates: 44°58’34.6″N 93°09’08.2”W). City staff will be wearing yellow safety vests at the fireplace; look for them. There is available parking in a small lot across from the fireplace\, and additional parking at the Como Pool. Information: Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toed shoes. The St. Paul Parks Department will provide the necessary equipment. Landscape here is varied and includes lakes\, woods\, wetlands\, and open grassland. Group usually birds Grass and Snail Lakes\, then stops at Taste of Scandinavia Bakery (bring bike lock) for brunch or early lunch. SUMMARY:Fall Migrants and Grassland Goldenrod at Battle Creek Park
DESCRIPTION:The Battle Creek Grassland is a critical nesting area which we have been working to preserve.  It is next to Battle Creek Park\, managed by Corrections\, with restricted public access.  We will hike on park trails along the western and northern edges of the grassland\, where we hope to hear and see migrating fall warblers\, sparrows\, and hawks\, along with the early fall colors of the grassland.  One way to prep for this walk is to watch  From Bobolinks to Blue Jays – Bird at Battle Creek    This trip is offered in collaboration with  Friends of Maplewood Nature \nDIRECTIONS    Meet in the South Battle Creek parking lot. She will also discuss the vision for Bird City and the hope for urban bird conservation across the hemisphere. \nJoanna Eckles started birding in elementary school\, studied Wildlife Science (Cornell University) and Conservation Biology (University of Minnesota)\, and has had a 35+ year career (so far) working for the Minnesota Zoo\, The World Parrot Trust\, Audubon\, and The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota. Joanna is currently working for American Bird Conservancy\, coordinating Bird City Network to support the creation of more bird-friendly communities across the hemisphere.
