SUMMARY:Birding through the Months at Silverwood Park
DESCRIPTION:This is the 3rd of a 4-trip Silverwood Park birding experience (February thru May). Attend one or all of the trips!   \nSilverwood Park is a beautiful urban park on the shores of Silver Lake. The variety of habitats in the park–oak forest\, marsh\, grassland\, and lakefront–make it a great birding destination\, with over 180 different species sighted in the park. \nBirding in a single location over several months can be a great way to get into birding. This series of four field trips will repeat popular excursions from last year\, giving participants the chance to know the park and watch for different birds each month as the seasons change. In addition to getting to know the birds of Silverwood\, participants will also be introduced to basic birding techniques and tools\, including digital resources. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars; a few extra pairs will be available. \nDIRECTIONS:     Meet at the doors leading into the Visitor Center from the parking lot. Field trips will be conducted in most weather\, with the exception of heavy rain.  45.046808\, -93.224715 \nREGISTRATION:     No registration necessary. Come for any of the sessions–attending all is not required. \nDIFFICULTY:     Most paths are paved\, but may be icy in the winter. With some luck\, we might catch a glimpse of a migrating shorebird along the lakeshore\, or see the fluffy head of an owlet. \n  \nTuesday\, May 13: 2-4 PM \nMay brings warblers\, warblers\, and more warblers! We’ll also begin to see some of the beautiful summer residents of the park\, including orioles\, rose-breasted grosbeaks\, and bluebirds. While the leaves returning to the trees makes seeing birds more challenging\, the variety of species in the park in May makes this one of the most exciting times of year for birding.

Author of three books\, including A Natural History of the Chicago Region\, Greenberg has taught natural history courses for the Morton Arboretum\, Brookfield Zoo\, and Chicago Botanic Garden. He helped spearhead Project Passenger Pigeon to focus attention on human-caused extinctions. \nLaura Erickson is an award-winning author of 13 books about birds and has received multiple national\, state\, local\, and organization awards for her conservation and education work and writing. She was a columnist and contributing editor for BirdWatching magazine and\, since 1986\, has been producing the long-running “For the Birds” radio program for many public and community radio stations. Laura has been a scientist\, teacher\, writer\, licensed wildlife rehabilitator\, blogger\, public speaker\, photographer\, American Robin and Whooping Crane Expert for the popular Journey North educational website\, and Science Editor at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

DESCRIPTION:The Breeding Birds of Minnesota – the Work and the Science \nIn-Person & \nZOOM LINK \nLee will provide an inside look into the creation and importance of The Breeding Birds of Minnesota.  This book is the first comprehensive and in-depth assessment of Minnesota’s breeding birds in nearly a century. One of the most valuable aspects of the Atlas was that over 700 birders from all walks of life surveyed every corner of the state. The Atlas provides each species’ life history and seasonal status\, migration\, foods consumed\, nest structure\, name origin\, habitat\, population\, and conservation status. \nLee A. Pfannmuller served as the state planning coordinator and interim executive director of Audubon Minnesota. She was also director of the Division of Ecological Resources at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources\, where she worked for fifteen years with the Nongame Wildlife Program\, the Natural Heritage Program\, the Scientific and Natural Areas Programs\, and the Division of Minerals. \nBoard Elections – May 8th @ Chapter Meeting \nWe will hold Board of Directors elections at the May 8th chapter meeting. SUMMARY:Beginning Birding though the Months at Silverwood Park
DESCRIPTION:This is the last of a 4-trip Silverwood Park birding experience (February thru May).  \nSilverwood Park is a beautiful urban park on the shores of Silver Lake. The variety of habitats in the park–oak forest\, marsh\, grassland\, and lakefront–make it a great birding destination\, with over 180 different species sighted in the park. \nBirding in a single location over several months can be a great way to get into birding. During this series of four field trips\, participants will get to know the park and watch for different birds each month as the seasons change. In addition to getting to know the birds of Silverwood\, participants will also be introduced to basic birding techniques and tools\, including digital resources. Join us and the St. Paul Parks Department in pulling invasive plants and removing trash from the area so that it can better support birds and other wildlife. \n\nSign-up: All are welcome! DESCRIPTION:16821 O’Brien Trail N\, Marine on St Croix\, MN 55047 \nWilliam O’Brien has a wide variety of habitats for us to explore.  We will start by following the grass trails along the forest’s edge\, looking and listening for warblers\, finches\, sparrows\, and vireos.  As we move along the trail\, we will pass through the walk-in campgrounds and possibly hear Towhees singing from the hillside.  The next stop is the Beaver Pond\, where herons\, egrets\, and Kingfishers usually hang out. DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center \n3815 American Boulevard\, East Bloomington\, MN\, 55425United   \nSunday\, June 1\, 11:00 AM-12:30 PM \nSt. Paul Bird Alliance joins with the Land of Lakes Bird Alliance to offer this opportunity for spring birdwatching at the feeder\, adjacent fields\, and nearby overlook. This outing is appropriate for birders with a range of mobility challenges including birders who use wheelchairs\, walkers\, or canes\, as well as those who walk slowly\, but all birders are welcome. We expect to see many species of bird at close range. All birders from beginners to experienced are welcome. \nINFORMATION     Binoculars will be available for those who need them. Please dress for the weather. \nDIRECTIONS      We will meet at the bird feeder just behind the MVNWR Visitor Center (no need to enter the building). DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 8\, 8:00 AM to Noon \nBike\, Bird & Sketch Sunday\, June 8\, Como Park to Frogtown Park & Farm \nDiscover the fun of birding from a bicycle and sketching birds you see in St Paul’s prime parkland green space. Birders\, bicyclists\, and sketchers – all skill levels are welcome. This is a family-friendly event. \nBikers meet at the Como Park Pavilion\, 1360 N. Lexington Parkway\, St Paul\, MN 55103 at 8 a.m. Bikers will be traveling 2.5 miles between Como Park and Frogtown Park. The two parks are connected by the Lexington Parkway bike path to the W. Minnehaha bike lanes. Como Park includes the Lake\, a zoo\, conservatory\, picnic grounds\, golf course and Cardinal Woods. There are restrooms in the pavilion. Frogtown Park is an urban park with native plant landscaping\, native tree planting\, picnic tables and organic farm plots. Top of the Hill provides scenic views of the city. There is a port-a-potty on site. \nPublic transportation- Como Park is accessible by MTC bus lines 3 and 83. Frogtown Park is accessible by MTC bus line 67. \nDirections: Bikers meet in the south parking lot of the Como Park Pavilion at 8 a.m. Bring bikes\, helmet\, binoculars\, sunscreen\, water. You’re encouraged to wear a high-visibility clothing and bring bike lights. \nSketchers meet at Top of the Hill\, Frogtown Park & Farm\, 946 W. Minnehaha\, St Paul MN 55104 at 9 a.m. Bring art supplies and binoculars or use the ones we provide. \nInformation: Biking difficulty is easy to moderate. DESCRIPTION:Ford Area C birding outing\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 14\, 2025 –9:00 am to 11:00 am\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHidden Falls Regional Park\, St. Paul\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the St. Paul Bird Alliance and FMR for a riverfront birding walk to a unique St. Paul site: Ford Area C\, a former hazardous waste dump whose proposed cleanup plan will be open for public input later this year. \nStaff will share updates about St. Paul riverfront happenings while we look for birds along the shoreline and through the floodplain forest. Bird lovers of all ages and experience levels are welcome; volunteers will be on hand to teach you. \nThis event starts at Hidden Falls Regional Park. The walk to Area C is 1.5-2 miles round-trip on flat dirt trails; there may be a few minor obstacles. Hidden Falls has ample free parking and porta-potties on site. \nJust so you know\, registration is required as capacity is limited\, and no pets are allowed on the outing.
