SUMMARY:Chimney Swift Sit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a program introducing chimney swifts and their life history\, natural history\, and some of the remaining mysteries we are striving to uncover. Stay for a chimney swift count as they descend into their chimney at dusk. \nChimney swifts have come to rely on human-made structures\, such as chimneys\, for roosting and nesting. Mags Edwards from Minnesota DNR Nogame Wildlife Program will discuss these fascinating birds and how we can help them. \nCommunity science efforts are underway to monitor the chimney swift populations. We will hear more about these efforts from Monica Bryand of Urban Bird Collective and opportunities for you to help scout and monitor chimney swifts around the Twin Cities. As the chimney swifts circle and return to the Casa de Luz chimney for the evening\, we will count them together and submit our count to the Chimney Swift Roost Monitoring Project. \nGood to Know: \n\n\nStreet parking is free\, and somewhat limited. \n\n\n Dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair or blanket for sitting. \n\n\nThere are no bathrooms available. \n\n\nRegistration for this free event is required. Limited to 50 participants. \nThis event is free to attend; however\, an optional $5 donation per person to the church is encouraged. We will collect donations at registration and donate the lump sum to the church on the group’s behalf. \nImage credit: Ben Cvengros/Audubon Photography Awards

SUMMARY:Does That Bird Need Help? When to Take a Trip to the Wildlife Hospital.
DESCRIPTION:** Co-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance ** \n** In-Person Only – Registration Requested ** \nDetermining whether a wild bird needs help can sometimes leave you scratching your head. This presentation will cover common scenarios that lead people to call the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WRC) for advice\, including broken bones\, grounded fledglings\, and nests in hazardous locations. You will learn how to help wild birds in need\, when to leave them alone\, and how WRC helps their avian patients take flight. \nWhen Brittney Yohannes joined WRC in 2010\, she worked in the avian nursery\, managing the rehabilitation of young songbirds and waterfowl. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with her Master’s in Conservation Biology\, she returned to WRC to oversee the volunteer programs department\, and stepped into the role of Communications and Development Director in 2023. She loves giving presentations like this where she can share how WRC lives out the mission of providing excellent medical care and rehabilitation for wildlife\, all while being powered by the community.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series | Kara Snow - Project Pileated Woodpecker
DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY\, APRIL 9\, 7 – 8:30 PM\n  THIS IS A ZOOM-ONLY PRESENTATION ** \n** Co-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance ** \nReservation and Zoom Link \nKara Snow – Project Pileated Woodpecker: Characterizing Tree Cavity and Use by Minnesota’s Wildlife (One-year update!) \nThe Pileated Woodpecker is a keystone species in Minnesota’s forests\, creating large cavities that many other wildlife species later use. In this talk\, Ms. Snow will share an update from the first year of her Pileated Woodpecker project\, including the methods we used to locate and monitor nesting cavities across a gradient of forest management. \nMs. Snow will touch on some of the challenges she and her team faced in the field\, early successes from the first season\, and what they are beginning to learn about habitat use. She will also highlight ways the public can help by sharing observations of Pileated Woodpeckers and cavity use\, which can play an important role in supporting this research going forward. \nIf you are interested in getting involved in this project\, click here for more details. \nPhoto-Rolland-Swain-Audubon

DESCRIPTION:This Event is FULL \nIn Person Only – No Cost but Reservations Required  \nCo-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nWe often compare our human bodies and senses (such as eyesight\, hearing\, digestion\, reproduction\, and more) and project what we think we know onto birds and their behavior. In this fun\, yet in-depth presentation\, Stan walks us through why we are almost always wrong when we compare ourselves to the birds. His extensive knowledge of bird biology is presented in his usual humorous\, accessible manner. \nNaturalist\, wildlife photographer\, and author Stan Tekiela is the creator of the popular state-specific field guides\, including Birds of Minnesota\, Wildflowers of Minnesota\, and Trees of Minnesota.
