In her book Feather Trails—A Journey of Discovery Among Endangered Birds\, Sophie Osborn shares her personal experiences reintroducing endangered Peregrine Falcons\, Hawaiian Crows\, and California Condors to the wild. While immersing readers in the triumphs and tribulations of being a wildlife biologist\, Sophie explores the threats that imperiled these birds\, and reveals that what harmed them threatens us\, too. She will discuss what led to the endangerment of these three captivating species\, recount the efforts of biologists to recover their populations\, and read a few excerpts from her book that describe what it was like to work with these magnificent birds. \nSophie A. H. Osborn is an award-winning writer and wildlife biologist whose work has included the study and conservation of more than a dozen bird species in the Americas. She contributed to reintroduction efforts for several endangered birds\, including as a field manager for the California Condor Recovery Program in Arizona. Her first book\, Condors in Canyon Country\, won the 2007 National Outdoor Book Award for Nature and the Environment. Reviewers for the American Birding Association chose her second book\, Feather Trails\, as their favorite bird book of 2024. Sophie has written articles for Bird Conservation\, BirdWatching\, and Wyoming Wildlife magazines\, and co-edited an anthology of short stories\, Wild Work—Adventures of Women Field Biologists (publication date: September 2026). SUMMARY:Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Zoom-Only Presentation – Co-Sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nStephanie Schubel is the field lead\, lead plover bander\, and field team coordinator for the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team (affiliated with the University of Minnesota and based out of the University of Michigan Biological Station).   She will be presenting her team’s current work and findings.  \nKey Highlights of Her Work\n\n\nField Leadership: For around two decades\, she has led hands-on conservation efforts for the endangered Great Lakes Piping Plover population\, coordinating field crews across nesting sites in Michigan and the broader Great Lakes region. \n\n\nBanding & Research: Schubel oversees the banding of chicks and adults to monitor individual birds\, track survival rates\, trace migration patterns\, and collect genetic data to support recovery efforts.   \n\n\n\n\n\nConservation Milestones: Her team’s work—combining nest monitoring\, public education\, predator management\, and captive rearing—has helped the Great Lakes Piping Plover population rebound from a low of 12 to 17 pairs in the 1980s to a recent record high of over 85 breeding pairs.    \n\n\n\n\n\nPublic Outreach: A central focus of her outreach is teaching beachgoers how to safely share habitat with these camouflage-nesting shorebirds (such as maintaining a ~100-foot distance and keeping dogs leashed).   \n\n\n\nPhoto Credit – Melissa Groo

DESCRIPTION:Zoom-Only Event – Co-sponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nThe Sax-Zim Bog is perhaps best known for winter bird-watching opportunities\, especially for folks interested in northern owls\, finches\, and boreal forest specialists. What many visitors don’t realize while visiting in the cold and snow of winter is that the same species can be seen year-round. The greater Sax-Zim Bog ecosystem has a lot to offer in every season\, playing host to diverse ecology and biology year-round. This presentation will cover some background on the region\, share a little about the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, and highlight the seasons and what makes this place so unique! If you have been wanting to visit the area\, but haven’t been able to decide when\, this talk will serve as a great introduction to how to visit and when to visit the Sax-Zim Bog! \nClinton Dexter-Nienhausis is the Head Naturalist for the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, a position that he has held for 10 years. He is an Environmental Educator and Naturalist\, and as Head Naturalist for the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, Clinton’s roles vary\, including teaching and scheduling education field trips in the Sax-Zim Bog\, teaching Minnesota Master Naturalist courses\, coordinating a number of Citizen Science endeavors in the Sax-Zim Bog\, and documenting and identifying all species found in the Sax-Zim Bog. His interests in the natural world include fish\, dragonflies and damselflies\, birds\, reptiles and amphibians\, moths and butterflies\, lichens\, prairie and boreal forest plant communities and ecology\, beetles\, ants and grasshoppers\, and everything in between! \nWebsite: saxzim.org
